The first Sitting Grand Prix of the season took place at the Ashcombe Volleyball Centre in Dorking on Sunday 20th September, which featured many familiar faces from last season as well as some eager new recruits.
Portsmouth started the new season in Tier 2 and despite fielding a much depleted team managed to take three victories from three matches and in the process gained promotion to Tier 1 for GP 2 which takes place on 18 October at Kettering.
Having seen off Kent Wyverns in straight sets (25-9, 25-17) and Help 4 Heroes Phoenix B also in straight sets (25-12, 25-16), Portsmouth need to overcome Essex Pirates for the clean sweep. It was not made easy for them but they came through 2-1 (25-14, 15-25, 15-12) to clinch promotion to Tier 1.
Jonathan Moore, Volleyball England Competitions Manager, commented, “It was great to have a number of new faces playing and volunteering at the Grand Prix, which is great for Sitting Volleyball and demonstrates growing interest in the sport. The new players will hopefully be inspired by the experience they have gained here today. I would like to thank the volunteers who really do make events like this better, their hard work and dedication is vital to the Grand Prix.”
